Compress video online, free
Shrink a video so it sends faster on WhatsApp, fits an email or upload limit, or simply takes less space on your phone. LAS Converter compresses the video on your own device, so you don't spend data uploading a big file first, and nobody else gets a copy.
How to compress a video
- Open the converter and log in with your free account.
- Choose Compressor and drop your video.
- Move the Compression Level slider (10% to 90%). The app shows the original size and an estimated target size before you start.
- Press compress and save the smaller file.
Best settings for WhatsApp
For the most control, use Convert instead: choose MP4, the H.264 codec (it plays on every phone), 720p resolution and the Balanced quality preset. If it is still too big, drop to 480p and the Small preset. Going from 1080p to 720p alone often cuts the size by more than half. The full walkthrough is in our WhatsApp compression guide.
Good to know
- Footage with a lot of movement (football, dancing, driving) compresses less than a talking head.
- Always compress from the original. Compressing the same file again and again loses detail each time.
- Large videos need memory; a laptop handles big files better than a phone. File size limits for each plan are on Free vs Premium.
- Only need the sound? Convert the video to MP3 instead; audio is a fraction of the size.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce video size without losing quality?
Lower the resolution to 720p and use the H.264 codec with the Balanced preset. On a phone screen the difference is hard to see, but the file is much smaller.
Is the video compressor free?
Yes, compression is part of the free plan. File size limits for each plan are listed on the Free vs Premium page.
Is my video uploaded when I compress it?
No. Compression runs in your browser, so the video stays on your device.
Why is my compressed video blurry on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp compresses videos again when you send them as normal videos. Send the file as a document to keep the quality you chose.
