How to convert HEIC or PNG images to JPG
By Lawal Ayo, LAS G Concept · Updated 15 October 2026
JPG is the format almost every website, form and phone accepts. You may need it when a job portal rejects your PNG screenshot, when a form says "JPG only", or when your iPhone photos are saved as HEIC and will not open on a Windows PC. This guide shows how to convert them with LAS Converter, and is honest about one limit with HEIC.
Image conversion happens in your browser, so your photos are not uploaded.
Step by step
- Open the converter and log in.
- Choose Convert and drop your image. You can also start from the Image Converter tile on the dashboard.
- Set the target format to JPG. The image tool can also write PNG, WebP, BMP and ICO.
- Choose the quality. Ultra uses 95% JPG quality, the default is about 80%, and Small File Size uses about 40%.
- If you want a smaller picture, set the resolution to 720p or 480p. The app scales the image down to a maximum width of 1280 or 854 pixels and keeps the proportions.
- Convert and save the new file.
About HEIC photos
HEIC is the format iPhones use by default. LAS Converter's image tool uses your browser to open the picture, so it works only if your browser can read HEIC. Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac can; Chrome and Edge on most Windows and Android devices usually cannot. If the app says it failed to decode the file, that is the reason.
Two easy fixes: on an iPhone, open this page in Safari and convert there; or change the camera setting under Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible, so new photos are saved as JPG from the start.
PNG to JPG: what changes
- File size. A PNG screenshot or photo is often 3 to 10 times bigger than the same picture as a JPG.
- Transparency. JPG cannot be transparent. Browsers usually fill transparent areas with black when saving a JPG, so a logo with a transparent background may get a black box. Check the result, and keep the PNG for logos.
- Sharp text. JPG is lossy and can blur thin text and line art. For screenshots with small text, use the Ultra setting or keep PNG.
Which quality should I use?
For photos you will upload to a form or send on chat, the default (about 80%) is a good compromise. For printing or archiving, choose Ultra. For thumbnails and websites, Small File Size is fine. If a form has a size limit such as 200 KB, convert at the default first, then resize to 720p or 480p if it is still too large.
Other things you can do
- Convert photos to WebP for websites; it is usually smaller than JPG at similar quality.
- Make an ICO favicon from a square logo.
- Convert many photos at once with Batch (Premium).
Browsers decide whether they can write some formats. If your browser cannot encode a format, the app tells you and asks you to choose PNG, JPG or WebP instead, rather than giving you a file with the wrong extension.
Meeting a size limit on a form
Job portals, school registrations and visa forms often ask for a JPG under a fixed size, such as 100 KB or 200 KB. A practical method: convert the photo to JPG at the default quality, check the size, and if it is still too big, set the resolution to 720p, which limits the width to 1280 pixels, then convert again. A passport-style photo rarely needs more than that. If the portal wants an exact pixel size, resize in an editor afterwards. Keep the original file safe in case a form rejects the result and you need to try again with different settings.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so a little detail is lost. At the default or Ultra setting the difference is hard to see on photos.
Why does my HEIC fail?
Your browser cannot decode HEIC. Use Safari on an Apple device, or switch the iPhone camera to Most Compatible.
Is there a size limit?
The website accepts files up to 500 MB each, far more than a photo needs.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
